Job Description
- Install, maintain and repair cooling and heating equipment in commercial, residential and industrial buildings
- Follow blueprints and manufacturers’ instructions to install motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators, pipes and ducts that make up refrigeration or air conditioning units
- Conduct required electrical work, handle soldering irons and read wiring diagrams
- Install and replace refrigerant and ensure that a unit is working properly
- When air conditioning or refrigeration equipment breaks down, determine the cause and make repairs
- Test equipment, electrical circuits, and control box and locate leaks in a system. Remove and replace (when necessary) worn parts, seal leaks, and add refrigerant
- In the winter, inspect air conditioning systems and do required maintenance work such as overhauling compressors
- Service and install furnaces, following blueprints and manufacturers’ instructions
- Install fuel lines, pumps, air ducts and fans. Connect the electrical wiring, control box, timer and temperature regulator
- Once the furnace or heating unit is in place, test it to make sure it is working properly
- Repair and adjust heating systems that use natural gas including large industrial furnaces, rooftop units, heating units and water heaters
- During the summer, when heating systems are not used, conduct maintenance work such as replacing filters and vacuuming vents, ducts and other parts of the system that may accumulate dirt or other contaminants
Job Description
- Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
- Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks
- Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures
- Prepare written work cost estimates and negotiate contracts
- Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs to establish the sequence of pipe installations and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring
- Keep records of assignments and produce detailed work reports
- Perform complex calculations and planning for special or very large jobs
- Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, and fixtures in structures using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels
- Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe to required angle using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines and pipe-bending machines
- Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters and fixtures such as sinks and toilets using hand and power tools
- Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings using hand and power tools
- Hang steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place
- Repair and maintain plumbing, replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes and opening clogged drains
- Direct workers engaged in pipe cutting and pre-assembly and installation of plumbing systems and components
- Install underground storm, sanitary and water piping systems and extend piping to connect fixtures and plumbing to these systems
- Clear away debris in a renovation
- Install oxygen and medical gas in hospitals
- Use specialized techniques, equipment or materials such as performing computer-assisted welding of small pipes or working with the special piping used in microchip fabrication
- Install, inspect, repair and maintain gas lines and gas equipment such as meters, regulators, heating units and appliances in residential, commercial and industrial establishments
Job Description
- Measure, cut, bend and form metal components to their precise shapes and fasten them into a finished product
- Use computer graphics and designing equipment as well as computer-aided cutting tools and metal bending machines
- Calculate precision work using mathematics, physics and geometrical equations
- Use tape measures, shears, saws, drills and punches to cut metal parts without mechanical aids
- Inspect and fabricate parts together using, nuts, bolts, rivets, screws, clips or by welding or soldering
- Transport, join and fasten parts to walls, floors, or ceilings using metal hangers. Install metal roofing a piece at a time and then finish the roof by fastening machine-made moldings around corners, joints, windows and doors
- Use hammers, punches, drills and shears to make custom-fitted parts, either by altering shop made parts or creating custom-fit parts on site
