The Effect of Winter on Your Plumbing: What to Check Before Spring Arrives

As winter slowly loosens its grip on Edmonton, it’s time to start thinking about the effects the cold weather may have had on your home’s plumbing. The freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and constant use of heating systems can put a lot of strain on your pipes. Before spring arrives, it’s a good idea to check for any potential plumbing issues so you can avoid bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road.

At Academy Mechanical Services Inc., we’ve seen firsthand how winter can damage your plumbing systems.  Here is what you should check before the warm weather sets in.

Inspect for Frozen or Cracked Pipes

Even though temperatures are starting to rise, winter’s deep freeze may have already caused damage. Pipes that were exposed to extreme cold, especially those in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, or garages, could have frozen and developed cracks. Even small cracks can lead to leaks, which may go unnoticed until they cause serious water damage. Look for visible cracks or bulges in exposed pipes and listen for strange noises when using your water – banging or gurgling noises might mean air or ice is trapped in the pipes.  Turn on your faucets and check for weak water flow, which could indicate a blockage from ice buildup.

Check for Leaks and Water Damage

Winter can be tough on plumbing joints and seals, and leaks may have developed without you realizing it. Even small drips can add up to wasted water and potential damage to your home. Check under sinks, around toilets, and near appliances like dishwashers and washing machines for any signs of moisture. Look for water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors, which could indicate a hidden leak. Keep an eye on your water bill— if it suddenly spikes without reason, you might have a hidden plumbing issue. Another way to detect a leak is by checking your water meter. Turn off all water sources in your home, then check the meter; if it’s still moving, that could indicate a leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

Test Your Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

If you forgot to shut off and drain your outdoor water lines before winter hit, they may have frozen. Once the weather warms up, check them for damage before using them again. Turn on outdoor faucets slowly and watch for leaks or weak water flow. Inspect hose bibs and sprinkler systems for cracks or damage.

Make Sure Your Sump Pump is Ready

With spring comes melting snow, and that means more water around your home’s foundation. If your sump pump isn’t working properly, you could be at risk for basement flooding. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to see if the pump kicks in. Listen for unusual noises when the pump runs—grinding or rattling sounds may indicate a problem. Ensure the discharge pipe is clear and directs water away from your home.

Inspect Your Water Heater

Cold winter months mean your water heater has been working overtime. This extra strain can cause wear and tear, leading to potential breakdowns. Check for any signs of leaks or rust around the base of the water heater. If your hot water isn’t as warm as it used to be, it might be time to flush the tank to remove sediment buildup. If your water heater is over 10 years old, consider having it inspected by a professional to ensure it’s still running efficiently.
